Boiler Types Explained

Choosing the Right Boiler for Your Home

Picking the right boiler can feel overwhelming, but understanding your options can help you make an informed decision. Here’s an overview of the three main types of boilers available:

Combi Boilers

  • What They Are: Combination (or “combi”) boilers provide both heating and hot water directly from one unit. They don’t require a separate hot water cylinder, making them ideal for smaller homes.
  • Best For: Small to medium-sized households with limited space.
  • Advantages: Instant hot water, compact design, high efficiency, and lower installation costs.
  • Considerations: They may struggle to supply hot water to multiple taps simultaneously.

System Boilers

  • What They Are: System boilers work with a separate hot water cylinder, which allows them to provide a steady supply of hot water to multiple outlets at once.
  • Best For: Homes with more than one bathroom or higher hot water demands.
  • Advantages: Consistent hot water flow, ideal for larger families.
  • Considerations: Requires space for the hot water cylinder.

Conventional Boilers

  • What They Are: Conventional boilers (also known as regular or traditional boilers) require both a hot water tank and a cold water feed tank.
  • Best For: Larger homes or properties with an older heating system.
  • Advantages: Can meet high hot water demands, suitable for homes with traditional systems.
  • Considerations: Takes up more space and can be less efficient than combi or system boilers
